A summer of adventure 🥾

Exploring Killarney Provincial Park over this summer has been an absolute blast. From calm days by the lake, to exploring the windswept peaks of the park interior, this place truly never ceases to amaze me.

For this post, I wanted to focus on the use of daytime light, and how it plays into the compositional and directional control that lighting and shadow provide during those hours.

Killarney represents such an incredibly dynamic landscape for Ontario, and the lighting exhibited here is one of the primary reasons that keeps me coming back, adventuring and exploring. Having such a vast range in verticality and depth allows for great creative control over a scene. Especially when you consider the possibilities that occur with mountain, and coastal weather patterns.

I’ve selected these images from the last two months, featuring various locations in the park, and of course many trips up Killarney ridge. It’s been a busy summer here to say the least, as these were all made in my free time, often squeezing in trips on days off and occasionally after work. Although the summer seems like it’s nearing its end, I’m looking forward to seeing this stunning landscape dappled in the colours of autumn.

Been busy 🥾

Big multi-caption series of 20 selects from the last month in #KillarneyProvincialPark featuring various scenes from the forest floor to sweeping vistas.

The bugs have tried, but my resolve is stronger, and enhanced by 30% deet. Happy to say I still got into the park for some new work.

Visited new places, and some old. Got lucky finding some compositions with potential, and unbelievably stoked to find a few scenes I’d been looking for over the years.

The bleach white stone monoliths marking the La Cloche Mountains are rounded and humble, yet stand to represent the many forces of nature on this earth. I hope you find the joy that I do in this wonderful landscape, and for me, honestly.

I’m just having a blast getting outside and exploring nature once again.

Haaaazy, but nearly full sky Aurora Borealis in Killarney Park 🌌

Last week we were treated to a powerful display of Aurora Borealis here in Killarney. We were able to witness some incredible movement and colour, owing in a large part to this area’s low light pollution, (Killarney is a RASC rated dark sky preserve). This was highlighted considering all of the atmospheric, and astronomical hindrances to viewing this night, such as: a waning moon with 85% luminosity (like pretty much full), altocumulus clouds which were shy to dissipate, and an ambient haze (seems to be a roll of the dice this time of year).

Luckily the Aurora was strong, reaching KP7+ and it lasted for a good while. After some suggestive stomping through the halls, I decided to fully commit, and just straight up shout to wake my roommates up at 1:30am on a work night. I don’t think they minded.

I was able to get to a few classic spots, and a few new ones. Still would’ve liked to get out to one or two more but the mosquitos won this night, and clearly wanted the view to themselves.

The next two images showcase how the night started. My hopes waned when the sun’s rays were still showing up in clouds, but after a while, that was less of a problem, and actually made for a dynamic sky in this first image. There is a soft red tone under the lip of the distant cloud, that’s light from the sun emitted while it’s physically below the horiz

I normally would’ve had the second image as the first, but last night was special. After returning home from a sunset shoot, I got the Aurora ping. Quickly checked SpaceWeatherLive and the data looked fantastic, but there was still lots of sun in the sky. I usually check a few aurora Facebook groups in Canada and Europe, but eastern Canada was mostly sleeping. This was highlighted by a reply to a group question, asking if “anyone in Halifax was seeing the lights”, being met with a stern “Get to bed Boi”. Oh how I love the Maritime vibe.

So, now somewhat unsure, I still decided to gather my colleagues who had just joined me for sunset, and we went back, but I was nervous.

I often sound the alarm when there’s potential for a display, but we were quite short on time, so we ran down to where we had just viewed the sunset. I began worrying as there was not much in the sky, other than the fading sun and first constellations. So in classic (Devin dragging people to view phenomena fashion), I stalled.

It started with my retelling of a section of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, involving Perseus and Andromeda, and their related constellations above, in the most cliff notes fashion. With my narration, I mixed in some exposures looking for signs of the lights, while telling a captivating tale of love, sea monsters, and weird weddings.

As the last faded orange light began to disappear, the pillars and structure of the lights began to show, against a setting sun, and sweeping darkness from the blue hour, seen in the first image, titled: when the worlds of day and night meet, george lake.

The display last night was short lived, and didn’t pick up much in Western Canada based on Facebook this morning, so for the second, it’s a case of right place, right time. Titled: into the night, george lake.

Not a large collection today, but a special one. Unfortunately the display didn’t get too much stronger after that in Ontario, but I know we’ll have a few more shows coming up in the near future. 🌌

Todays post comes with a realization. A realization that whatever tolerances I built to bugs in Ontario, were gleefully lost in Alberta.

The Northern Ontario black flies and mosquitoes have worked to test, break, and reshape me, and they got close. Very close.

But I will not be stopped in my quest to take pictures of rocks, water and trees.

My colleagues have no doubt gotten sick of my incessant whining. So I decided, instead, to write a short haiku to the bugs as a testament to my resolve. 🦟🪰

Will I hike again? 😭

I’m happy to say the bugs have definitely wound down their operations, or maybe they’re laying in wait for a grand last stand. Regardless, I found a fantastic new song by @wellesmusic, and will be ready, and with a new haiku ready to go for their next visit.

A good few weeks for light, not the best for hiking. Still went into the park quite a bit, first trip up to Killarney ridge and the Crack for the season, lots of granite ridge, twice in one night fortunately and unfortunately. Lots of shots from the rock last week too, rolled my ankle and hit my knee via large tripod ball-head. 🥴 Healed well and was back in action over the long weekend.

Earlier this season, hikers came off the silhouette and shared trail conditions, @the.northern.outdoors was kind to share some photos. I loved one that he took from the crack during a misty day.

When I saw rain in the forcast over the long weekend, with some potential for lightning, I couldn’t resist, I have a strange love for hiking in bad weather, and I will never say no to exciting atmosphere. A silhouette hiker surprised me later in the night while I was taking shelter from stronger rain. She was about to attempt the scramble before I let her know it would be dangerous in the current conditions. We waited it out and after some chatting, agreed to join me for a few photos, and head down together well before it got dark. We got lucky when strong orthographic lift pushed an airmass over Killarney ridge and engulfed us in cloud. Right place, right time.

The scramble at the crack is often more intimidating going down, from experience. In my past role in Killarney, I guided many large groups of families and day-trippers up and down that scramble, was nice feeling that helpfulness again. Hiking out, we had fun talking about her studies in physics, took me up on my offer for a ride to her car, and the advice that she should hike to the lookout at little Sheguiandah before heading home the next day.

Also had some opportunities to refine my compositions at the famed “Sunset Rock”. I have three or four that I go to, but always trying new things. I find it’s a great way to showcase the park. Was joined by colleagues and the talented @auroraj.photography who is now rocking it out at one of our neighbouring parks, the beautiful French River Prov. Park. Hoping to get there this season to see Recollet Falls again.

Hope everyone had a nice long, or regular weekend ✌️

Return to Killarney, first week 2026

After a nearly 5-year hiatus, I’ve found myself in the place that started it all, and what would turn into an adventurous journey of self-discovery, challenge, growth, and change.

The Ontario landscape has always called to me. From my childhood, I was lucky to spend nearly every summer, until my mid-teenage years, on Beausoleil Island National Park in South Georgian Bay.

It was a place that, for me, represented the truest definition of freedom I could feel. I often left longing to return, or, in a fantastical turn of events, imagined we would sell our home and move there.

The dreams of children can sometimes have a magical way of animating themselves. Not always in the ways we imagined, but often through action, and occasionally, luck.

When I first visited Killarney, to say I was excited by the place would not be doing my outlook justice, but I have a difficult time finding the words.

Instead, I try to translate my love and passion through my photographs, with the express intent of sharing how I see this place with those who have decided to join me on my journey.

Five years have gone by, but the place that enchanted a young lad in his 20s so much has changed very little.
I’m excited to continue my photographic development in this wonderful park, alongside the people and critters who make this place so special.

After a nearly 5-year hiatus, I’ve found myself in the place that started it all, and what would turn into an adventurous journey of self-discovery, challenge, growth, and change.

The Ontario landscape has always called to me. From my childhood, I was lucky to spend nearly every summer, until my mid-teenage years, on Beausoleil Island National Park in South Georgian Bay.

It was a place that, for me, represented the truest definition of freedom I could feel. I often left longing to return, or, in a fantastical turn of events, imagined we would sell our home and move there.

The dreams of children can sometimes have a magical way of animating themselves. Not always in the ways we imagined, but often through action, and occasionally, luck.

When I first visited Killarney, to say I was excited by the place would not be doing my outlook justice, but I have a difficult time finding the words.

Instead, I try to translate my love and passion through my photographs, with the express intent of sharing how I see this place with those who have decided to join me on my journey.

Five years have gone by, but the place that enchanted a young lad in his 20s so much has changed very little.
I’m excited to continue my photographic development in this wonderful park, alongside the people and critters who make this place so special.

I’m excited to share I’ll be heading back to work in Killarney Provincial Park this summer! If you’ve been here for a while, you’ll know that Killarney is at the core of my work, development, approach to composition, and subject.

Killarney represents a time in my life of searching and growth. It was there I became more myself, excited to learn and grow as a photographer, privileged with an abundance of natural scenery, and vast variation in compelling subject.

I’m excited to try new things, experiment with the mediums I enjoy, and continuing to learn and grow, in a place that I hold on to dearly. With plans to explore more of Northern Ontario’s vast and stunning landscapes as well.

Elevators at the Toronto reference library

With the aim to produce some images for a series of mine, I recently visited the Toronto Reference Library (TRL).

Inspired by the work of Balthazar Korab in Toronto, and escpecially the TRL building, I set out to the inconspicuous box on Yonge Street, that houses one of Raymond Moriyama’s design and architectural masterpieces.

When I entered the library, after a hiatus of roughly 15 years, I was welcomed by the well known interior façade of the library. Its architectural design features fantastic symmetrical and asymmetrical components, which lend favourably to drawing acute attention to one’s subject of focus.

But when I entered the grand atrium, what caught my eye, once again, was the libraries twin red cylindrical elevators. I always found their retro futuristic style, featuring curves on the interior and exterior, quite visually, and emotionally compelling.

I had found a subject, that I didn’t realize would have me scaling that place for nearly 3 hours.

Riding in those elevators is an absolute treat, and I can tell you, as seen in the last two images (I went up and down about 15 times testing long exposures in the very well balanced tube).

These 9 images showcase different approaches to illustrating movement and subject. The elevators are often running frequently, but rarely in tandem, making for several interesting scenes. Paired with the buildings generous lines and curves, made for a fun evening.

Return to Killarney ’25 — La Cloche Landscape Series

I wanted to wrap up 2025 with a highlight of images I’m proud of making… but most are from one place, over a relatively short period.

After the fire in Jasper, I was stuck, to put it lightly. Life had already been up and down, and I felt an immense sense of being lost. When the fire came around, it felt like the universe telling me to make a change.

Post-evacuation, I moved in with my partner’s family, who graciously took me in while I re-navigated what to do next.

Through various career change ideas and eventually landing at WestJet, that feeling only grew stronger. I became sedated in the city, finding an acceptable groove and sticking to it, losing touch with what brought me across the country in the first place.

As summer neared its end, I was preparing to move back home to Ontario.

Near the end of August, I saw my old supervisor post a job listing. After an hour of internal debate and nervous pacing, I realized I’d regret not applying far more than reaching out.

After a few cold calls and emails, I was on my way back to Killarney.

I drove from Calgary to Thunder Bay in one 24-hour marathon stretch, excited to come home.
By the following evening, I was inching closer to Killarney Park.

I haven’t felt more alive than driving Highway 637 that night, pulling into the staff area and heading to Sunset Rock for magic hour.

I cracked a drink and looked out at those quartzite hills, ready to reconnect with myself and this amazing place.

What followed felt like another marathon: early sunrises and 1 a.m. nights chasing the northern lights.

After my contract ended, I felt the truest sense of reinvigoration, one I had not felt since first arriving in the Rockies not so long ago.

I’m excited to share more work from Killarney in 2025, along with images from Jasper and Banff, both here and on my website over the coming months. Alongside some new urban work I’m keen to share.

Finally, a special shoutout to @lilicraig for enduring what it’s like leaving a building with me, and a sober second thought on sporadic trip ideas 🍻

Full Sky Aurora in Killarney Provincial Park, September 14/15, 2025 🌌

Following a short post-work sunset hike, I received the Aurora ping signalling that we could be in for a show, I decided to wait atop #graniteridge for the lights to begin.

I was expecting a mild display, as the data was showing KP5 at most, and then it started! A strong beam of green light cast across the sky one hour after sunset, and there was still sunlight in the sky!! This was a good indicator that this show might be a little more than we bargained for.

My phone and headlamp died, so I ran down granite ridge to tell my fellow park staff about what was going on above.

I managed to pull a few away from dinner and after they saw the show, I quickly got in the car and drove to the groundhog campsites, parked at an empty spot and ran out to sunset rock, alerting any campers in my path that were still awake.

After assembling a group of 10 or so viewers at the rock, I then went down to second beach to continue my mission.

After a few photographs at the shoreline and chats with viewers I alerted in the radio-free campground, I started my mad dash first to A.Y. Jackson lake, and then to the Little Sheguiandah campsite and overlook.

I have about 7-10 spots I was hoping to photograph Aurora Borealis in Killarney, and happy to say I got 5 crossed off my list.

It was a powerful display, reaching KP7 at one point and going overhead. My image from A.Y. Jackson Lake, marking the first photo in this series, was during this specific spike in activity where the Aurora went overhead!

An ode to Jasper

With the wildfire’s anniversary today I wanted to share a little bit about my time in Jasper.

My journey to Jasper began after my contract in Ontario’s Killarney Provincial Park ended. I moved back home and quickly realized how much I missed living and working in nature.

I had put a search for jobs in a few areas, and ended up stumbling across the @jasperplanetarium

That same day I applied, and a few days later I was interviewed, and accepted an offer to join their team.

I packed my bags and was on the road by the end of the week, excited to start a new adventure in Western Canada’s Rocky Mountains.

My trip to Jasper was one I’ll never forget, I decided to drive through the United States and back up into Canada, visiting Devils Lake State Park in Wisconsin, and Mt Rushmore in South Dakota, then going up to Alberta through Montana, passing Glacier National Park.

I drove through Calgary and then into Banff where the smile on my face grew as I inched closer and closer to my new home.

My first drive down the Icefields was magical. A snow storm had just passed and I was able to produce a crop of images I still hold to high regard today. It was a great introduction to where I would spend some of the most important years of my life.

Work started fast and was a lot of fun, and I met the first of who would be my “Jasper Family”.

We started with group hikes, and they were one of the best things we did as a working family. Giving everyone the opportunity to get to know each other outside of work, and maybe be themselves a little more. Sometimes they turned into multi-day trips, and became the stuff of legends.

The summers were stellar, with beautiful star-studded nights and the occasional display of Aurora Borealis… This still didn’t stop us from trying to get into the @athabascahotel before close on Sundays.

I have a lot more to say, a little to much for a 1000 character limit.

Now life has taken me away from Jasper, onto a new adventure. But Jasper will always be there, longer than we will be on this earth. I’m grateful to say that I truly lived there. In every sense of the word.

A show for the ages! 🌌
There’s no doubt that your feed today and possibly for the next few weeks will be filled with Auroras.

Over the last four days, we’ve had some incredibly strong solar storms, which have given our planet unbelievable displays of Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis.

Last night, Myself, @joshmcca & @kat_khoroshun hit the road to chase the light show across Banff, starting at Vermillion Lakes, Cascade Ponds, and then along the Icefields Parkway to Peyto Lake.

When the show peaked, it was unbelievable, and even when it dipped down, it was still so bright that you could see the green bands of light from the car.

From what I’ve read, last night’s storm is now registered as a G5 class, rivalling the Aurora of May 10th this year.
(The May 10th Aurora was influenced by multiple flares, last nights October 10th was influenced by one powerful X-class flare)
Two storms of this magnitude in one year is a testament to us nearing the peak of our sun’s 11-year Solar Cycle # 25, and is not common. However, we could see this kind of activity until early 2026, so if you missed it last night, don’t let the fomo get you down. I can guarantee you’ll have a few more chances until Solar Cycle # 25 starts its downtrend in 2026; just make sure you visit Canada for the next one. 😉

I hope you were able to see some of it last night.
After getting home at 5 a.m., I’m ready for a nap and to keep an eye out for tonight.

A show for the ages! 🌌

What an unbelievable 48 Hours.
Thanks to all the First Responders and Local Authorities who helped and continue to help this devastating situation. The fire is now moving through town.
We’ve all moved across Western Canada to escape the wildfires in Jasper, and the fact that 25 000 people are now displaced and having to scatter is something new to me.
These photos are from the 2022 Chetamon Mountain Wildfire on the Northern Section of Jasper National Park.

We’ve all moved across Western Canada to escape the wildfires in Jasper, and the fact that 25 000 people are now displaced and having to scatter is something new to me.
These photos are from the 2022 Chetamon Mountain Wildfire on the Northern Section of Jasper National Park.

Dawn light at Pyramid Lake 🏔️
• I’ve photographed Pyramid Island quite a bit over the last 2 years, so going out on a sunrise shoot with @albert__jose I wanted to try something a little different. I’ve seen photographs from this exposed rock outcrop on the shoreline of Pyramid Lake, but wasn’t sure how I’d approach the composition. I tried a few different takes from a higher position balancing the rocks and background, but noticed the straight lines at the farthest point of the outcrop, and felt like they would lead the eye nicely. After some rock hopping and adjustments I’m very happy with how this one turned out. 🤙

This Aurora season has had a very slow start, so last nights brilliant display of lights was a welcome treat. 🌌
Even with the moon shining bright and high in the sky, we saw stunning ribbons of green and pink Aurora cast against the northern sky, it peaked shining overhead with fast moving curtains of light.

Yesterdays partial eclipse from Jasper Alberta! We watched the moon eat a chunk of the sun in a fairly thick blanket overcast, luckily right at the peak, we had enough of a break to catch some photos!! This view reminded me of the moody desert scenes from Arrakis in Dune 🌚🌞

After photographing Auroras over the last two years, I’ve definitely gotten tired of shooting the same spots over and over. So when @mikegerephoto texted me a photo he took of a lone Bighorn Sheep and an Aurora behind it, he sparked my interest in trying something new. Astro-wildlife will be my new niche going forward 🌌🦌

As we enter the spring equinox, we are in store for some pretty amazing shows, tonight looks like it could be an incredible send off, even with the moon full and high in the sky.
